Talking for Purpose with Dr Nerida Volker: Building the Rural Allied Health Assistant Workforce

Thursday 09, Jun 2022

In June of 2022, Dr Nerida Volker an Industry Innovation Specialist with TAFE NSW and now an AHANA Board member, met with Cath Maloney, CEO of the Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) on the regular SARRAH podcast "Talking for Purpose" to discuss the importance of the Allied Health Assistant workforce and its role in increasing the reach and capacity of allied health professionals, particularly in rural and remote settings.

They also discuss the:

  1. 2021 review of the HLT Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector training package (in which the Certificate III and Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance are located) and engaging with workers across health and disability sectors, and all range of health and care settings, to support changes to that training package;
  2. role of Job Skills Councils (JSC)* as the bridge between industry and the VET sector; and
  3. important distinctions between Allied Health Assistants and other types of delegated health roles.

*Update (December 2022): A consortium led by Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) was successful in securing the role as JSC for health and human services, early education and sport and recreation sectors. It will be known as HumanAbility. You can read more at the AHHA site.
